Sometimes the most daunting part of a project is simply getting started.
Learn to see career management as enjoyable and instructive in its
own right, then you will be able to learn from the process as well
as focus more sharply on your future.
Making a commitment
As with any project, to succeed you need to commit yourself fully
to the idea of what you are doing and acknowledge in advance the
changes that may have to be made. It will involve looking at all
areas of your life and the impact on your private life and implications
for your family. Are you prepared to e hones with yourself, to be
open to all possibilities, and to be really thorough in your analysis?
Making the time, generating the energy, and finding the focus to
concentrate on your career may be stretching. There may also be
risks involved, but there will be rewards for those who have an
open mind and a willingness to explore their career possibilities.
You will soon have another management skill in your portfolio: that
of career management.

Questions to ask yourself
- In which direction would I like to be heading?
- Do I have an ideal career destination in mind?
- How will I make time available to manage my career on
a regular basis?
- What resources do I need to help me?
- What preparations should I be making at this stage?

| Creating a career file - Make up a file of your career
thoughts and ideas. Collect job advertisements and course information
that interest you. Even if these items are not relevant straight
away, they may be useful later. You are gathering raw material
to help you in the planning process ahead. This file may also
provide useful data for future job applications. |
Choosing your tools
To complete any job effectively, you need the appropriate tools
that reflect your own style and personality. Some people prefer
to work alone, perhaps using a computer or a book. Some prefer to
use a professional advise, or a close friend, colleague, or peer
group. Sometimes a mixture of these will be appropriate. Use whichever
tools you feel most comfortable with, provided they help you progress
with your analysis and evaluation.
