Low Wages in Fast Food Chain Stores (11 Oct 07)

Although the average wage rate has increased in Hong Kong, low-wage workers in the catering industry are unable to enjoy.

A survey conducted by the Catering and Hotels Industries Employees General Union has shown that the average hourly wages of the seven major fast food chain stores in Hong Kong (KFC, McDonald's, Fairwood, Maxims MX, Yoshinoya, Cafe de Coral and Pizza Hut) were all below HK$20. KFC's rate is the lowest, paying HK$16.18.

It is reported that some of these chain stores uses various ways to cut staff benefits such as increasing wages but cutting free staff meals, making them take a week off after every three weeks of work, or asking general workers who get already low wages to do the work of cleaners as well.

Unionists ask the government to set a minimum wage as soon as possible with a standard rate of HK$30 per hour.
