Serving Customers in a Restaurant

Basic communication skills in English is essential in retail business as front-line workers or management staff have to attend to customers no matter they work in a restaurant or in a shop. The following is a simple conversation between a waiter and a customer in a restaurant. Learn how a front-line worker talks to customers using the right tone and suitable diction.

Waiter: Good afternoon. How many are in your party?

Customer: Five of us. We'd prefer a booth by the window.

Waiter: This way please.

(After the customers have seated)

Waiter: May I bring you something to begin with, a drink or some appetizers perhaps?

Customer: I¡¦d like an orange juice.

(After all the customers have been served with their drinks)

Waiter: Are you ready to order?

Customer: I¡¦ll have a sirloin steak.

Waiter: How do you like your steak cooked, medium or well done?

Customer: Medium will be fine, thanks.

Waiter: The steak comes with your choice of fries or cole slaw.

Customer: I¡¦d like fries.

(After all customers have ordered)

Waiter: Will that be all?

Customer: Yes, I think so.
