Shell Malaysia: Online Recruitment Most Effective - JobsDB Malaysia

Matchmaking jobs is a serious business, especially during the critical time like now. JobsDB Malaysia, being the leading online recruitment agency in the region, knows that and so does our recruitment partner, Adecco Malaysia. In an exclusive interview with JobsDB Malaysia, Adecco Personnel Sdn Bhd’s operations & communications executive, Fasya Neza Zainal Abidin shares with us information about the company and its human resource strategies:

Online recruitment has caught on of late, judging from the many new online agencies emerging in the last few years. In a span of ten years, JobsDB has globally amassed over 10 million job seeker members and over 150,000 corporate clients. Sharing their views on online recruitment is oil and gas industry leader, Shell Malaysia.

According to Shell Malaysia’s Human Resource (HR) Director, Jonathan Kohn, online recruitment via the Shell website has been one of the most effective in attracting graduates and professionals.

“Applicants can easily post their resume and track the progress of their application online, at their convenience,” he said.

The Shell website provides a list of vacancies as well as a comprehensive overview of careers for potential candidates. It also offers a summary of roles in different disciplines, thus enabling a job seeker to explore the various areas available in the company.

Those who are unable to find any suitable opportunity immediately may subscribe to the job alerts feature on the Shell Malaysia website and receive first-hand news of any new vacancies.  Graduates can also utilise the “degree matcher” feature on the website to help them identify career options most suitable to their degree or discipline.

Shell Malaysia also utilises JobsDB online recruitment services, as well as the traditional recruitment method through trade publications and local newspapers. In addition, the company also participates in campus career fairs organised by local universities as part of its graduate programme.

Shell Malaysia currently employs more than 6,000 diverse and talented people nationwide.

As a global business, employees become part of an energy company that is committed to running its business in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

When asked about the pulling factors that make Shell Malaysia a great place to work, Kohn said: “Shell practises a supportive culture where we aim to find a balance between structured support and professional freedom.”

Shell Malaysia employees enjoy flexible career paths and excellent growth as the company believes in investing in the training and development of an employee.

In encouraging work-life-balance, the company also offers flexible working practices wherever operationally possible.

Shell Malaysia reviews the compensation packages periodically to ensure they remain competitive and attractive in the market place. Over the past year, the company has significantly strengthened the compensation package for technical professionals and graduates.

In addition to enjoying an attractive salary package, individual work contributions are recognised and rewarded through performance-related pay and bonuses.

The company conducts external surveys with graduates and experienced hires to better understand their perception of Shell Malaysia and appreciate the criteria that are important to them when seeking a career.

Similarly, regular dialogues with Shell employees are carried out to determine areas for improvement.  This can take the form of online surveys, discussion forums or interactive webcasts. As an example, Shell Malaysia conducts the online Shell People Survey on an annual, global basis to encourage ongoing, constructive dialogue between leadership and employees.

According to Kohn, this is also an avenue for employees to make suggestions on improving the work environment, to input into policies or to address areas of concern.

Today, Shell Malaysia continues to recruit both graduates and professionals where needed.

Currently, under its graduate programme, Shell is seeking candidates from the following disciplines: geosciences, engineering specifically petroleum engineering and well engineering, and information technology (IT).

In 2008, Shell Malaysia won the coveted Graduate Employer of the Year and Graduate Employer for the Engineering category in Malaysia by Grad Malaysia.
