Top 10 Ways to Become Someone You Would Respect and Admire at Work
by Gary Alger, Solutions EAP
  10. Never lie. Period.

  9. Really listen to people, paraphrasing what you think you hear, in order to check your understanding.

  8. Accept personal responsibility for all of your feelings, especially negative ones. No one "makes me feel" anything.

  7. Don't talk about people behind their backs. What 'goes around' actually does eventually 'come around'.

  6. Don't spread rumours, if you can possibly avoid it. If you must check it out, try to get to the source first.

  5. Refrain from, and/or respectfully confront, any and all disrespectful and inappropriate jokes, gossip, plots and conspiracies, formal or informal. There is almost always someone nearby who will appreciate it.

  4. Catch people being nice, and/or doing good work, and call them on it.

  3. If wronged, avoid the temptation to seek revenge, especially through hurtful anger. It really does hurt you more than it hurts others.

  2. Don't hold grudges. They don't look good on you.

And, the Number One way to become someone you would respect and admire at work...

  1. Accept responsibility for your words and actions, especially your mistakes. ("Personal power means never fearing to say you're sorry.")
